Hormel Real Bacon Snackin’ Nuggets Jalapeno

Sometimes you see a product and think this has to be the greatest thing ever made. When I saw Real bacon Snack Nuggets and  in Jalapeno flavor my knees became weak. I have a deep love of bacon. It might be the most perfect food ever made. Jalapenos are up there too. Combining the two in a snack form…Pure genius. In theory anyway. Want to know how this perfect combination of flavors actually stacks up?

Smell is big to me. I knew If I opened this bag and it smelled like cardboard I might cry. The smell that wafted up from the bag though was smoky and distinctly pork. Sticking my nose into the bag smelled like raising a slow smoker and inhaling barbecue brisket. It was amazing though not overwhelmingly that of bacon. More smoked barbecue than frying bacon in the kitchen making the entire house smell of wonderful bacon. The taste though what about the taste?

The first thing I noticed after putting some on a plate was the tenderness of the pieces. The majority of the bag consist of moist, tender chunks. For preservation reasons most of the delicious fat was removed. Since Fat will go rancid more readily than protein. I said most fat was removed not all, I found some nice pieces of cured bacon fat. It was divine.

The taste was definitely familiar of the salty smoky bacon we all know and love. The jalapeno was more subtle. Like I’ve said before I love spicy foods and this could have stood to be hotter. Not only more heat but more of the jalapeno flavoring. It only had a mild heat on the aftertaste.

The Bacon nuggets come in two flavors, Jalapeno and pepper. I have not tried the pepper. The price is $2.89 for a 3 oz bag. For the entire 3 oz’s it has 300 calories 180 from fat. The bag contains zero carbs and 30 grams of protein. Bacon Nuggets are gluten free. Not all the ingredients are paleo friendly but gluten is the big concern for me. This might be my new go to snack for BOB’s, GHB’s and camping food. The expiration date on this bag was for 7/27/2013  or roughly ten months from now. With proper rotation this fits the short term storage category.

  1. These sound like a great source of Protein, fat and calories when hiking or working on the trail or in the woods. These would be great to keep handy in a BOB.I think I would love to try the Peppered version as I love ‘Peppered Bacon’. (Jalapeno’s in moderation).
Question: Are these Hormel snacks cooked bacon or just smoked and dried?
I read recently about an ‘Amish’ style deli up in Ohio, that ‘Double’ smokes their bacon. Double smoking makes it extra rich in smoke flavor and does NOT require refrigeration….
That too sounds like an option for food storage for a retreat or survival situation.

  2. “Do you love bacon!”

I can’t believe you’d ask that! Ironically, in today’s post, I mentioned making laundry soap from bacon grease, in order to make all my clothes smell like bacon….

  3. Bacon is a cured meat prepared from a pig. It is first cured using large quantities of salt, either in a brine or in a dry packing; the result is fresh bacon (also known as green bacon). Fresh bacon may then be further dried for weeks or months in cold air, or it may be boiled or smoked. Fresh and dried bacon is typically cooked before eating. Boiled bacon is ready to eat, as is some smoked bacon, but may be cooked further before eating.`
