Prepping For Zombies

Today I’m going to have a little fun. My goal today is to share some tactics to implore in preparing to survive a zombie apocalypse. But you say James zombies aren’t real. Well yes I know this but zombies are fun to think about. In fact zombies was a gateway drug into prepping for me. My life long affair with post apocalyptic and zombie movies. Something about them always drew me in. Other horror movies could not grab my attention. Zombies are a thinking mans monster. If you are a Tokyo pedestrian during a Godzilla rampage, well you’re screwed. Same thing with most other monsters. With zombies though the scenarios are always about people trying to survive. Zombies are slow moving and stupid with an all consuming desire to eat. We won’t delve into in this post but they represent many metaphors I will chat about over beers. After years of watching the movies and thinking about what I would do I eventually stumbled onto a certain internet forum about zombie survival and went down the rabbit hole of survivalisim. I soon realized many of my “plans” were completely idiotic. Now that I know better I can revise those early plans. Today I’ll share some tips with you on how you can survive a real zombie apocalypse.

Community

Community
This is one thing I cannot stress hard enough is having a community you can rely on. If you think you will survive a zombie apocalypse on your own you are delusional. If you are serious about surviving you need a solid community you can trust and that have the skills needed. There is no way to learn and become proficient in all the skills needed. If you can manage to move to an area that holds valuable skills in high regard would be good. Having a group of friends that will meet up in the case of Z day is another good idea. However I think the ultimate in Zombie survival housing, not counting your own island fortress, is an off grid eco village type community. Especially if that community of made up of preppers and not hippies. Well at least not all hippies, I like hippie girls, some are great and skilled people. I imagine these communities hardly noticing most disasters. If a disaster comes and you grow most all your own food and have a self supporting community then you are better off.

Guns
You could go any number of ways with this. Grab an AR15, a Mosin Nagant so on and so on. I’m going to give a different suggestion, one that goes against most, and have some damn god reasons for it. My top suggestion for surviving the zombie apocalypse is a scoped Rugger 10/22. Yes I’m saying that the lowly .22 rifle is my top pick for survival in zombieland. Right now ammo is a little tough to find but it’s getting better. The reason I chose it are as follows. Ammo is light and cheap. Last box I bought was $20 for 550. I see it returning to ~$15. For a relatively cheap amount of money you can stockpile a small arsenal. If the point is to destroy the brain with a scope doing that with a .22 is easily enough. If you get hollow point subsonic rounds you should have no worries about destroying the brain and keeping the noise down. The less noise you make with the shots the less attention you’ll be attracting. Add on top of that the ability to take small game with it makes the 10/22 my number one pick for the apocalypse.
Farm Animals

Food and Water
I am not a fan at all of the MRE as your food plan. In the short term freeze dried foods and canned foods make sense. For the longer term you need to be thinking more sustainable. Perennial crops, seed storage an animals are your real solution. You will be healthier off for it and it will last and renew. Food storage i great but is not renewable. Once you finish that can of mountain house it is gone forever. A chicken will, hopefully, lay man eggs in her life. to Survive the zombie horde you will need a renewable food source. I for one would rather eat fresh food over Soylant. So plan on planting some crops now and getting practice and getting some animals. Hunting and foraging could be useful but also very dangerous. Leaving the community increases your chances of getting eaten,
Those are my top tips for survival in a zombie apocalypse. Those are a basic plan that needs to be tailored to meet your needs. I hope you had as much fun as me thinking about the zombies and how to outlive them. It is one of my favorite topics and one I always think about around this time of the year. I’m off to watch my fill of cheesy zombie movies.

  1. What I find humorous is how I believe all the Zombie talk began. It’s hard to describe the firepower of your new gun by how many pieces of paper it can kill, yet it’s not politically correct to talk in an open forum about how you could sit on your roof and kill all your neighbors. The idea of the roving hoard of looters that are coming to take your supplies after society collapses, were often substituted by the euphemism of the Zombie heard. If an anti-gunner got wind of some online talk of shooting your poor neighbors who were just looking for food, that could get ugly on a National stage, but a bunch of guys talking about Zombies and Goblins, well that’s just nerds taking a break from Start Trek reruns.

One good thing it did was bring a lot of these “nerds” that weren’t really into guns, into the community and it developed even more support for the cause from a previously untapped source.

  2. Zombies may not be real but prepping is a serious matter for many other reasons. From small crises like power outages and snowstorms to major natural disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes and tsunamis; prepping and being prepared to survive on your own for some time is extremely important. Especially nowadays with all the economic financial mess, tax hikes, food and water shortages, and government shutdowns citizens need to know how to survive on their own.
