Hammock As A Bed Experiment

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. I decided to write this in the morning as opposed to my usual before bed. I wanted to squeeze in one more night of my experiment. I decided to use my Trek Light Hammock as a bed a few weeks ago. It was something I had long thought about.

Recently two things lined up that made me decide to do so. First my I finally had to get rid of my 10 year old bed. I was sleeping on the futon in the living room. Which is on  it’s death bed too. Next while listening to Tim Ferriss’ podcast Kelly Starrett was talking about hammocks as a bed. He was saying to move away from hard beds and get one as soft as possible. His recommendation was to use a hammock as a bed. That’s all I needed. If Kelly was saying it would be the best for health and mobility then I was in. What did I learn in my experiment? Let’s find out!

Conflicted The Game: The Survival Card Game

Maybe I’m a bit late to the table with this review. Conflicted the game has swept through the survival community. For good reason too. I have tested the game out a few times now. I needed to see what all this hype is about. Why is every podcast about survival playing it? Myself included stay tuned. Unless you’ve been living under a rock I’m sure you have heard of this game. Today I’ll share my thoughts on it. What do I like about conflicted the game. What I don’t like about it and how I think it should be used.

Keto Clarity: The Definitive Guide To Ketosis

Keto Clarity
Keto Clarity

Yesterday I interviewed Jimmy Moore on his new book Keto Clarity. Today I’ll publish my review of Keto Clarity. If this is your first time hearing the word Keto I’ll explain it. I’ll convince you why you want to check out Keto Clarity. Even if you are not overweight. There is a lot more to the ketogenic diet than weight loss. That’s icing on the low carb cake.

Ketogenic Diet

What is this keto diet anyway. Well I’ve talked about is any times before on my journey of weight loss. Our good friends over at Wikipedia define it as such.

Ketosis/kɨˈtsɨs/ is a metabolic state where most of the body’s energy supply comes from ketone bodies in the blood, in contrast to a state of glycolysis where blood glucose provides most of the energy. It is characterised by serum concentrations of ketone bodies over 0.5 millimolar with low and stable levels of insulin and blood glucose.[1][2]

So it’s an alternative fuel source for the body. Switching from glucose to ketone bodies. Switching to high-octane in my opinion. How do you get into a ketogenic state? In easy terms you eat low carbs, moderate protein and high fat. Notice I didn’t give specific numbers there. For each person those numbers will be different. In Keto Clarity Jimmy covers the many ways to measure ketone levels. He goes over which ones work best and which are not that good. You can wing it but it’s best to test.

Keto Clarity

With Keto Clarity Jimmy knocked out a tome of wisdom. He gathered the best and brightest in the low carb field. He researched all the science. He himself conducted a year-long experiment with thousands of data points.  I do not have the patience to weigh myself everyday. Measure blood glucose and ketone levels more than once a day. His N=1 experiment was detailed and impressive. In Keto Clarity he not only covers the basics of getting into ketosis but some great tips of optimizing it. He digs deep into the science on why it works and is better for humans. How does a keto diet affect different illness like epilepsy and schizophrenia?

If you geek on the science behind why things work you will love this. If you just like to know what to do you will love this book. With shopping lists and sample meal plans you can hit the ground running. I like that the chapters are short and to the point. The end of every chapter is a bullet point list of that chapter. That is the best thing I’ve seen in a book. If you’re not familiar with Jimmy’s work you don’t know how entertaining he is. That comedy comes out in this book well. I learn best when It has some humor in it. I could never learn from Ben Stein. So go check out Keto Clarity and give it a try.

The book review should be out this week. Jimmy has been in the low carb field for a very long time.  Years ago when I first got into Atkins I found his YouTube Channel. He had some great tips and recipes. He was also both passionate and funny. Like Jimmy though I made some slips and put back on the weight. It took a few tips from Jimmy to get it back under control. Keto Clarity has all those tips and more.

Man Up

Man Up Men: Don’t Be Weak

I’ve seen a trend developing recently. A very appalling trend. I laughed it of at first. It kept on happening though. I just want to yell at them to man up.  For the past week I have met several weak men. Though they hardly deserve to be called men. Not only in their weakness but laziness. They display no traits of manhood. They are sad disgraces to our cavemen ancestors. They need to learn to man up now while times are good.

Man Up

I was at work one night when a co-worker, Gary, told me about what just happened to him. He said a customer came and asked him for help loading up a fridge. Gary was thinking maybe it was a special deep freezer in stock. Normally we only carry small college fridges. He has him show him over to it. The customer ask if he needs a cart or to get help for it. Gary is bumfuzzled when the customer, a towering man in an under armour sports shirt, needs help with this tiny fridge. It could not have been over 50 pounds. He easily picked it up and placed in their shopping cart. While the customers wife smirked. Ladies if your man can not lift a college fridge You Have a girlfriend. I thought obviously he exaggerated the story. Good one Gary. Yeah OK. Since Hearing that story It happened to me. Twice. And Gary One more time. In a week. A WEEK. Man Up!

When I was asked to help with a fridge I thought It MUST be a big chest freezer. The customer stated I needed a cart. I was like I don’t think we have any too big for the shopping carts. He just looked at me like I was crazy. The customer was an average built man in his early 40’s. I had him point to it and was disappointed. Though it was not one of the small ones it was not big. As in maybe you could hold 2 two liters coke bottles vertically. I picked it up and gently put in his cart. Then helped him carry it out. Hiding my desire to yell at him to man up.

Try It!

None of these “Men” tried to pick it. They immediately went for help. They believed they could not do it. Obviously neither lift weights. They have no strength. Although these fridges were so light they probably could have lifted them up. They did not even bother to try. I think it’s two-fold why. They do not take pride in their strength. I have never bought anything I could not pick up in a store. I have snatched up big futon boxes and put in carts. I have carried out heavy pool tables. I always try to pick it up. If I have something awkward shaped or just that heavy I ask for help. Not someone else to do it. I don’t feel entitled to make someone else do it for me. I want it and if needed I will ask for help. That means that I’m still lifting my half. None of these people even though to do that. Or offered. I doubt that the men of the 50’s would act like that. I know any real man would not. SO I yell it here. Man Up. Since I can’t at work. Please Man up. Your children need you to man up. Your wife wants you to man up. This is James from Survivalpunk saying MAN UP!
