Why Choose Perennials For Survival?| episode 159

This week Mike and I talk all about Why Choose Perennials For Survival?

Perennials are an extension to your prepper pantry.  One that keeps on giving.

In case you didn’t know a Perennial is a plant that returns year after year. Unlike annual crops that die at the end of the season.

Unlike annuals that usually produce in summer, perenniuals have a staggered harvest.

Perennials aren’t even as picky as annuals. They can be planted in places you could not grow tomatoes and cucumbers.

  1. Aah, first time on a podcast! Thanks for splicing my nervous rambling into something semi-coherent! Nice job guys, got some good ideas to try and new resources too. Love the Paul Wheaton podcast (maybe because it’s laced with *almost as much profanity as yours), that’s how I first heard of Gaia’s Garden and I’m right in the middle of that one now.
If you’re interested in a little more detailed soil-building how-to this is a pretty good lecture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yPjoh9YJMk, another one I heard of on Wheaton’s podcast.

  2. Loved this episode. Mike should eat too much at CeeCee’s with you. Blood sugar be damned!
We always hear about edible plants, but what about plants for Fiber, Fuel, Tar, and most important Medicine. I have lots of plants that aren’t edible but are far from decorative. From my Flax, and Echinacea, that my wife thinks are just the flowers by the driveway, to the Dogwoods, Maples and Elderberry, all of my plants have uses, and we should all consider replacing any purely decorative landscape features with medicinal perennials like Echinacea, Bone-set, Fox-Glove, Oregano, Witch-hazel, and Garlic. Most of these plants are fairly attractive and will grow anywhere in the US that is not a desert or a parking lot. Thanks for the show!

    1. Update. I talked Mike into cicis.

Good point. I didn’t even think to mention all the other plants. I did think about talking about medicinal ones but that could be a whole show. And will be.
