Finding Ammo and Practicing During the Shortage

Finding any ammo right now is getting harder and more expensive. I’ve  been limiting my range trips to try to keep more ammo on hand. That of course leads to not getting enough practice. It’s a viscous cycle of not finding enough ammo to shoot and to store. I’m starting to see the ammo shortage calm down a bit. My feelings are by the summer, hopefully, it will be over and we can go back to buying as normal. Until then I have a few tricks help you find ammo and to stay good with your weapons.

Always be Looking

Knowing when you look for ammo is the key to finding it. I’ve got into the habit of picking up a few boxes of the calibers I’m looking for whenever I see them.  Anytime I’m in a store that sales ammo I run by and check for .9, .223, and the elusive .22 long rifle. Being always on the lookout has scored me a few boxes. Making sure to have money for ammo so you are always ready when you do manage to find it. Being broke and seeing the ammo you need get sold to someone better prepared sucks.

Make Friends

Get to know the people that work the counters at your local stores. This could take a while to build up a good relationship but once you do you will have a better chance to get ammo. I will ask people to text me if they get in ammo or let me know if any is coming in. I would never ask anyone to hold ammo being that it could cost them their job but having the inside track is just fine. Plus more times than not the people working in the area are really great people and totally worth getting to know.

Know the times

Learn the truck delivery times for your local stores. Mine is a truck every day of the week  and it is finished being unloaded around seven pm. That means that seven to eight pm, when the ammo is coming to the floor, is the best time to come by. I’ve seen long lines show up at that time especially the last time a shipment of .22 came in. So If a store is close enough just show up around time for it to come out and hang around. Better than watching the retarded crap on tv and you might score some ammo.

Dry Fire Draw

Dryfire

If all else fails and you still are having trouble getting any ammo run dry fire drills. In fact you should be doing that anyway. I would recommend running some dryfire drills once a week at a minimum if not even three times a week for better results. This will help keep your skills sharp and make your precious ammo last longer. You will get much needed drawing and holstering practice which is not allowed at most ranges.

Those are a few of my tips on getting ammo during this current shortage. I left out the online options at the moment because I have not personally used them. Also the prices online are completely absurd at the moment. I saw one place selling a brick of .22 for $160! I thought they much have misplaced a decimal point.

Are you finding ammo? Do you do any of the tricks mentioned? Do you have any tricks not mentioned? Let me kn ow in the comments!

  1. Great tips! One valuable aid my friends and I use are high end airsoft replicas, no not the ones you see at walmart or large sporting goods stores… Quality replicas of all major models are available online and at reputable airsoft retailers and can be affordable and effective! The good ones are 1 to 1 replicas with proper weight and all of the same buttons and functions in the same spot as your beloved 1911, glock, 92, XDm, 226, 229, AR, AK, etc. Some of the pistols will actually recoil harder than a .22. They are great for training muscle memory! For $15 you can get 5,000rnds and most “gas” powered versions can be recharged using cheap coleman propane tanks.

Many of my local law enforcement agencies and training classes offered by ranges use airsoft as a cost effective and generally safe training tool.

  2. Those are some good tips. In addition to dry firing there is a device called a SIRT that is a simulated handgun. It’s full weight with an adjustable trigger pull. You can also do what we did in basic, attach a spring-style clothespin to an angled flashlight. And last, but not least you can learn to reload, as a way to save money, learn a new skill, increase your ammo supply, and have a “reusable” supply of brass and lead.

  3. I am just getting into the ammo and gun part of my prepping. My husband and I own several guns (with my favorites a shotgun and several 22s), but are no longer hunters and don’t shoot much anymore. I attempted to get my husband to take over this part of prepping, but so far he isn’t committed. I just feel I can’t wait any longer. Therefore, I got him to go target shooting last week. I then found out we don’t have what I consider a good amount of ammo. Today I went to our local Bass Pro Shop and found shotgun shells, which I bought one box, and will go back and get more because I am most comfortable with shotguns and 22s. I made a mistake not buying more. I am very confident using a shotgun for protection at my home…and even the vice president says we should all have a shotgun…even though you can tell he hasn’t a clue about this gun and how to use it. Idiot! The handgun ammo was behind the counter. After waiting in line, I bought the last of the 22s, 5 bricks total. The men waiting behind me in line were not happy. The store clerk told me they got the ammo in yesterday and it had been 3 weeks since the last delivery. My husband now seems to understand that we should start increasing our supply of ammo.

  4. If you have friends who shoot… combine forces. I have a $100 agreement with several friends. If they find ammo I’m looking for at a decent price, they buy it for me, up to $100, and I pay them back for it. I do the same for them. I buy the amount I want, and then get some for the friends as well. Also, I have one friend who buys .223… something I don’t need. But when there is a limit to how many he can get, he gives me the money to buy some too so he can have a bit more.
