Surviving Zombies

This week Mike and I have a little fun surviving zombies. We are both huge fan of Halloween and Zombies. Zombies are partially the reason I got into survival in the first place.

We have had a long time to figure out the ideal way to survive a Zombie Apocalypse. The tools and resources you will need to live it out. Our take is a bit different than most.

I feel that the only way to survive zombies is with community. Without a tight knit diverse community you cannot hope to survive zombies. You can’t be both farmer, soldier and surgeon, cook, mechanic and whatever else you need. Having members that are better suited to specific tasks is how you will be surviving zombies.

We talk about all that and more.

Episode 72 Fall Gardening

Fall Gardening

This week we tackle some things to plant for your fall gardening beds. Many stop gardening in the fall to wait till spring. This is a huge mistake. Many of my favorite crops grow best in the fall and into winter.

Kale, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower are all staples of my diet and all grow best in the fall. Many herbs do will in the fall and will winter over with mulch. Cilantro does well in the fall here in the South. In the summer and spring it will bolt quickly.

I have my lettuce boxes loaded up too. Chard and romaine taste much sweeter in the fall. Many of the fall crops tend to be the more expensive ones to buy. Kale goes for almost 4 bucks a bag. Organic salad greens cost a ton too. Fall gardening is both fun, not being in the heat, and saves you money.

Homebrewing

This is the second and last instalment on homebrewing. I thought it would have ended up being a short episode but then I got to rambling.

This week we talk about making easy hard cider and quick mead. I also mention making a hard lemonade. Not sure how the lemonade is going to turn out but will post the results when Mike drinks it.

Homebrewing

This is the first part in our two part series on homebrewing. We cover the James quick, cheap and easy method of homebrewing. The method that will give you the biggest bang for your buck.

In this part we cover how to make an Ale. For Ales you need any Ale yeast. Not talked about are lagers. I am not a big fan of lagers in  general. The difference between and ale and a lager is in how the yeast perform their job. Ale yeasts work in best in the 70°F range. Also Ale yeasts are top ferminting. Meaning they float on the top of the wort while digesting the sugars. Ales are faster usually finishing in a week or two.

Lagers are bottom fermenting at a temperature around 40°F and can take months to finish. Lagers end up not being worth it to me to make at home. The store shelves are filled with Lagers. Brew great ales, buy lagers.

We cover the materials and supplies you will need to become a home brewer. Enjoy and let me know how your brew adventures go.
