Smart Phone Apps For Survival

This week Mike and I talk about how to use smart phone apps for survival. Now that everyone has a smartphone on them why not use it as a survival tool. Many of the apps can and should be used as additions to stand alone devices. Phones can become damaged or run out of charge. A good compass does not need to be charged. But there’s no reason to not have a compass app on your phone.

Even without service many of these tools will still work. One of my favorite is the Serval mesh app. It creates a local area network to send and receive phone calls and texts on the network. As long as there is wifi signal between the devices you can make calls. It does not have to be internet connected. In fact one device can be used to create the ad hoc wifi network.  The only problem is distance that way.

A flashlight app is another must have app for survival. It’s a decently bright light with you everywhere you go. Even if you carry a dedicated ecd light an extra light is good. You can leave one light on strobe mode to help find your way back to camp.

Picking A Survival Knife

This week Mike and I tackle picking a survival knife. We focus on how to find the right knife or blade system for your area. Not all systems work well everywhere. Jeff Radtke in Wisconsin has little need of a machete. Just like carrying an axe in Florida isn’t the best.

After location budget is the next big concern in picking a survival knife. You should get the best knife you can afford. It needs to be one of, if not the most, expensive items in your kit. Not saying you can not get by with a $17 Mora. In fact you should definitely own one. If you break on, which is hard to do, you aren’t out much money.

The knife is your main tool and should be high quality. I would not be happy to have my life depend on a cheap knife. You can’t take your money to the grave. I have a few hundred in my knives and they are all quality.

We list off a few recommendations. Knives that I have owned and used. We also talk about some to avoid.

Troy Grice

This week Mike and I are joined by author Troy Grice. I have previously reviewed Indivisible and have a review copy of Oathkeeper. I am a slow reader with a backlog so I invited troy on. We had a great time chatting with Troy on his new book Oathkeeper.

This book like Indivisible plays on government corruptions a lot. Also on those on government that do the right thing. Troy brings a balance to his characters I like. He doesnt paint unrealistic pictures.

We also dig into politics a bit. Troy being an Anarcho Capitalist and I being a Anarchist. Mike does not have a label. Troy talks about his transition from conservative to his current leanings.

We talk about whether people are waking up to freedom or steadily sleeping. We all agree that that majority is still asleep and remaining so. That nothing seems to be jarring folks awake to their prison cells.

Lastly we laugh about the presidential race. How we are in the Idiocracy race. The people are now demanding a WWE style performance  from candidates. That the front runners are so over the top ridiculous that it is insane for Trump and Sanders to be poling so high.

Don’t forget to rate and review us in Itunes.

Bugging Out To Walmart

Thinking about Bugging Out To Walmart? Is that you plan for the P.A.W? If so you might want to listen to today’s show.  I remember before I got into survival I had lot’s of idiotic plans for when The shit hits the fan. Bugging Out To Walmart was one of them. Though the word plan could  hardly be applied.

Many think that during an apocalyptic situation they will just stroll into the local box store and load up. Fill their shopping cart up and drive home like usual sans the payment. That they will get to the store first and hold it as a fortress. They also believe that they are the only ones that have ever though about this.

Advanced Nutrition

This week we talk Advanced nutrition with Gary Collins. After having Gary on about his off grid project I wanted to pick his brain on more nutrition. Gary, creator of the primal power method, has been in the industry longer than the competition. He is one of the few Master Level personal trainers. He knows his stuff when it comes to advanced nutrition.

I hit Gary with some tough ones this week. Many questions that I have on my health journey. I feel though that many have the same problems. There is a lot of talk in the health blogs on intermittent fasting, gut health, and weight loss stalls.

Gary handles all my hard ball questions without flinching. The mark of a true expert. On many points we agreed completely. On a few I heard answers I didn’t expect. That got me excited. One of Gary’s tops supplements he recommends is turmeric, which is good for weight loss. That’s not something you hear from others in the field.

Gary goes in-depth on the topics. We spent a good 20 minutes on just intermittent fasting. The whys and hows. We also talk about who fasting is not for. It is a great tool for weight loss. But not right for everyone. Definitely not for beginners, elite athletes or bodybuilders. If you are trying to put on mass restricting your eating to a small window is stupid. If you are largely sedentary and trying to lose the last few pounds it works great.

I love Gary’s take on blood work and supplements. There are several supplements to be taking without any blood work. Vitamin D3 is one. We can  guarantee that if you live in the continental 48 you need it. If blood testing was cheaper testing would be or viable.
